Mile-high hostie now homeless: court
19:08 AEST Wed Jan 27 2010
A former Qantas flight attendant who achieved notoriety by having in-flight sex with British actor Ralph Fiennes, is now homeless with a conviction against her name after assaulting police.
A Melbourne court heard the one-time jet-setting hostie Lisa Robertson was now depressed, bankrupt and reduced to seeking accommodation from the Salvation Army.
A teary and upset Robertson, 41, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday following a violent confrontation with police at her Southbank home on Australia Day during which she kneed one officer in the groin.
The episode unfolded following an incident with her defacto and police were called to the apartment.
When two male police officers did not let her view security camera footage of her defacto, she violently swung her arms to avoid being handcuffed, Leading Senior Constable Shaun Gunn told the court.
She slapped and backhanded one officer, kneeing him in the thigh and kicking him in the shin.
She then kneed the other officer in the groin.
Both members sustained swelling and red marks in the attack.
When Robertson was eventually overpowered, she fell onto a ceramic vase which broke and cut her left arm that required hospital treatment.
Leading Sen Const Gunn said she was later interviewed by police and lashed out again, kicking over a table and kneeing and kicking a third officer in the leg after police tried to restrain her with handcuffs.
During the hearing, Robertson at times sat holding her head in her hands.
Lawyer Sue Macgregor said her client suffered depression, lacked support and was effectively homeless and now accepting accommodation from the Salvation Army.
Ms Macgregor said Robertson's infamy from her mile-high incident made her life difficult and more exposed to public scrutiny.
She said Robertson sold her story to media outlets in the UK but was cheated by friends and never received a cent.
She had received a community-based order after pleading guilty to bankruptcy charges and had a number of medical issues, she said.
Ms Macgregor said Robertson conceded her behaviour was inappropriate and she had over-reacted while under the influence of medications.
Robertson pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting and causing reckless injury to police.
Magistrate Jelena Popovic said her offending was serious, but accepted she was "not travelling well".
"I'm extremely concerned about this path of self-destruction you seem hellbent on at the moment," Ms Popovic said.
Robertson was convicted and given a 12-month good behaviour bond. She must also pay $500 to the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, which remembers police killed on duty.
Qantas sacked Robertson after she admitted having sex with Fiennes in an aircraft toilet during a flight from Darwin to India in January 2007.
After initially denying the tryst, Robertson confessed to the encounter in an interview with a British newspaper and later on Nine Network current affairs program 60 Minutes.
