It was even more powerful and gut-wrenching tonight. Felt really sick again afterwards - I think I'm through seeing it now. As well as just stupendous performances from Ralph and Claire tonight, I was struck by the irony of the Stranger from Corinth. He's amazed by Oedipus's reaction to his revealing that Polybus is dead - it's almost funny: he can't understand why Oedipus is so relieved and stands here aghast. Then in his fog he grasps that Oedipus is still worried about the sleeping with his mother part of the prophecy, and thinks he can reassure him by telling him that Polybus's wife is not his real mother; but of course that terrifies Oedipus much more (and sends Jocasta on her path to hell). Again, the contrast between what we know and what we think we know, which Nik highlighted.
I think Ralph might have slightly overdone it actually. Afterwards there was another Q&A, with Jonathan, Claire and Ralph. It started fine. Ralph came on eating an apple, looking very, very tired but joking with Jonathan and Claire: the interviewer commented on how often he'd worked with Jonathan and asked how he felt when he got the call to play Oedipus, and he said "Oh God, more disagreements with Jonathan, more neuroses between us, but ok I'll do it anyway" and they all laughed and he touched Jonathan's shoulder affectionately. Claire and Ralph were asked if it was the first time they'd worked together, and she said yes, and he said "It's a first date", and she said "It's going quite well, we're even snogging" (which they do in the play). They were asked how they manage to drag these extreme emotions up from the gut every time, and Ralph said "to be honest, sometimes you can't, you try to but some nights you have to pretend, sometimes not" (it was extremely clear I thought that tonight he hadn't had to pretend). They said they both liked to improvise and they never told each other what they were going to do. Indeed the big scene between them was incredibly strong and fresh tonight and he threw her on the stage seemingly really hard.
But after a few minutes Ralph started to look uncomfortable, not because of any question but just like he didn't feel very well, and he stopped eating the apple, and looked altogether a bit sick. He suddenly got up and walked off stage, without saying anything, and they just carried on without with him. I think it was all too much after such a performance. And maybe he stayed up most of the night last night too! Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine after a rest.
Claire's so lovely. The last question was from a young woman of about 20 in the front row, who said "I'm American, I flew here to see this and I got up at 5.45am this morning to get a ticket for today, and I'd just like to shake your hand". Claire immediately got up and shook her hand and said "Congratulations on your new president". The Q&A then ended and the interviewer and Jonathan left the stage, but Claire sat down on the front of the stage and stayed chatting to the girl.
